Python use in Cloudsuite MT environment

We have started our move to Cloudsuite MT for FSM and HCM. We have training planned for our team for Infor OS and IPD. We don't have any custom applications and will be using these tools mainly to create files for 3rd party vendors and to automate processes (I'm sure I am over simplifying this statement). Do you use Python? and if yes, in what scenario? Thanks in advance.

Hi Joy,

Python can be used in a zillion different ways to perform actions that aren't otherwise available in the data flow tooling. In addition to being used in data flows, a Python script can also be executed via ION API. So the possibilities are quite vast.

We use it quite a bit in preference over XSLT for transformations, enrichment, and translation between different semantics or standards of files. We've used it to process MT940 bank statements into SunSystems journal entries. We use it to transform new-line delimited data from the data lake into a format accepted by the target as ION really doesn't handle reading ndjson or csv data.

There is a large library of open-source Python libraries that can be loaded into the Python module of ION and used by your scripts. This opens the possibilities of use even further. Check out https://pythonwheels.com/ for a summarized list of the most widely used wheels in the wild.

I am interested in this topic "a Python script can also be executed via ION API". Which ION API suite contains APIs for executing the Python scripts?

You need cobol for what?

No, not a mainframe, we run the Infor Lawson S3 product on Windows (Single Tenant). All of that code is in Cobol. We have custom cobol programs to create benefit files, extracts to our Time and Attendance, and many other systems. We need to rethink the extracts where we cannot use APIs.

Yep. Keep in mind the same payload size Python has in a data flow also apply when executed via the API. But it can be used, for example, as an JSON-only alternative to IMS, which uses a hybrid JSON/XML payload. You just need a script that handles the payload to convert to a BOD or whatever the result you need is.

There are other microservice type use cases that we've done with it as well. Really quite flexible with a bit of imagination.

Saw your question and this thread and I very much appreciate the guidance from Kane and others. But I would also strongly encourage you to do your research into the native functionality within Landmark - that underpins FSM and HCM. There is native API ability to every business class within a Landmark application for importing and extracting information. You can use that together with replication sets, IPD and ION API to create any external extract files that you need. It is very unlike the Lawson 10 world that you are running today. Not discouraging you from using Python or other tools if you see a need, but I would suggest that many Landmark clients don't need to go that route for most of their business needs.

Thanks Hans for your guidance. We will have conversations with our Infor consultants and will heed their recommendations. If we can do the work needed with APIs and IPD, we will use those tools first.
