Data Lake vs Reporting tool based on the JDBC driver

Hi,

I would like to know if some of you have thought about or already implemented a reporting solution ((in the sense of creating a report with a layout and not just a simple SQL query) ) that would query the datalake data through the use of the JDBC driver?

For example, to overcome the limitations of Ad Hoc Report while not wishing to go as far as implementing Birst.

Does this approach seem relevant to you?

Hey Denis,

The Data Lake is a big data tool so It emphasizes scale for data storage and volumetric growth but when you begin building out use cases that often require performant access to data (as well as 'cleaned' and transformed data), it often makes sense to employ a data warehouse between the Data Lake and the reporting tool.

Data Lake has a variety of tools including storage APIs and Compass SQL (JDBC and APIs) so you can build client-driven access for your solution architectures but some organizations use the ION ETL tool or in-house ETL tooling to manage the integration from Data Lake to their data warehouse out of convenience.

We use the ION ETL Tool to replicate specific Tables from the DataLake to a local SQL Server instance, thus supporting essentially any Reporting Tool available.
If you already have a preferred Tool, that means you can just keep using it.
Also, this supports instances where you have other Non-Infor developed solutions that can not, for some reason, utilize the API's to extract Data.

We also use the ION ETL tool to replicate specific tables from the DataLake to a local SQL Server database. Currently we are only using this for Power BI Dashboarding Reports or ad hoc queries/reports but as Rene B said, that method will support just about any reporting tool.

Do you think that wanting to do reports directly on the datalake (without having to feed and rebuild a new data source) provided that there is this type of tool is a bad way?

I've heard the name ION ETL several times now? Could you direct me to a source of information from which I could learn more. Thanks

For those that use the ETL tool (we have it but are limited it to sales), do you ever come close to the data egress limits? Do you bring alot of transactional data? We have limited it due to concerns with the year limits.

Yes - your point is well taken.
But for reports that don't require such a lot of data cleaning or formatting, I was wondering if there wasn't room for tools that I would compare to Ad Hoc Report in the sense that they would attack the data from the M3 tables but replicated but still have more flexibility on sorting and selection criteria.

We monitor out intake and have not had issues thus far. Most of our Data Lake consumption outside of the defaults have been for Sales Reporting. We are moving in a direction to start creating some inventory reports and purchasing reports so we expect to see some increase there, but we are not as large of an organization as some.

Is there documentation available for the ETL Tool. It is referenced a lot but have not found much documentation about it.

We ended up using DBeaver EE (Enterprise Edition) and although not perfect we are able to download data and then pass it on to SQL using DTS Packages.

With DBeaver EE you can also schedule tasks that could mimic a report schedule and create the reports/data on your network.

We could not find much info or advice on the ETL tool and therefore ended up with DBeaver.

Birst for CloudSuite Distribution has been very disapointing and will NOT recommend to use AT ALL.
