Default Member (Element) Definition in Self-Service

Hi,

We tried to configure the Self-Service Application to show the default ad-hoc report with a definded set of Elements.

As far as I could tell, I can only show or hide a dimension, but if I want to select a default element the dimension has to be disabled.

A customer was asking if it is possible (or planned in the future) to select a default element without disabling the complete dimension.

Mark, if you create ad-hoc report and save it as a dashboard, it will appear same (with the check of the security permissions) for all users, so this is kind of what you want.

In general, one of our roadmap items include 'Perspective' item which will help users to create different data areas from the same cube, so customers can do ad-hoc report not from a single cube, but from a relevant perspective, which also simplify ad-hoc experience.

There are two things that immediately spring to mind.

- The easiest - If you control the creation of the dimension you can nominate (in EPM Admin) the default element. You do this by editing the extended properties of the dimension. Here is a sample for a dimension called ZTEST:

The line you need is <Alea:DefaultMember Name="El2" /> and the placement matters. El2 is the element name.

The second option I haven't tried yet so won't suggest it.

My knowledgeable colleague DS kindly just provided this sample App Engine script to set the Default Element. It doesn't have any error tracking so it's important to get the element / dimension spellings right:

Just to add before running a script like the above take a copy of the extended properties of your dimension so you can revert them in the case of any muck up in editing them.
