OLAPCopyDataArea for string cells

Hi,

can OLAPCopyDataArea also be used to transfer string values from one data area to another?

Right now I'm using an APE-Process which opens a data area, and then looping all source records and writing them to the target area, which is very slow...

Or any other idea how to transfer string cells in bulk from a source to a target area (same cube)

As to does the OLAPCopyDataArea copy strings. The short answer is no.

The longer answer is the function includes a scaling factor so is clearly intended for numeric values.

As to better I am assuming your comments are stored in string elements? String elements in dimensions tend to be rare. A thought would be to create a custom attribute on the dimension with string elements to indicate that it's a string element and use a dimension query to select just those elements for the loop. Unfortunately last time I tried dimension queries don't support intrinsic attributes.

Ralf, is your process using OLAPCellWriteBufferWriteString? Using an OLAPCellWriteBuffer is a LOT faster than single OLAP writes.

Actually the OLAPCopyDataArea does work with strings. Use the following syntax.

OLAPCopyDataArea(dataArea, cubeName, "Relative", 1.0, targetSll, sourceSll, true, true);

Hi everybody,

thanks for your help and tips.

Right now I don't use the WriteBuffers but OLAPCellWriteStringDynamic, which was easy to implement and fine as long as we had only a few cells to transfer during test phase. But the application and data volume is growing...

Next week I'll try the OLAPCopyDataArea first and if it works for strings as well, that's perfect. Otherwise will probably split the data transfer in one part for the numeric values using OLAPCopyDataArea and a second one for the strings using the WriteBuffers.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi,

yesterday I implemented the OLAPCopyDataArea instead of looping and well, instead of about 3 minutes to transfer the data, now it takes about 10 seconds and all string values are copied as well.

So I can recommend to everybody using this function whereever possible.
