Clean up ION Alerts/Notifications?

I'm looking at implementing a process to notify buyers when a specific activity happens with their PO. If I implement ION Alerts for this, is there a standard method to clean up old alerts or notifications (assuming users will not mark them as 'done')?

there is an Expires after option if you use a Notification.

Thats interesting, but I'm seeing:

## Not supported; this is not required for ION any more. Specified the expiry date time for the specification. Specifies that that the notification will be automatically closed at this time. The end user will not see it anymore. Users are also not informed that notifications are about to expire

And, of course, I think we're going to end up with an Alert at this point.
