Request to make changes to the ABC codes - Good/bad idea?

We're CSI 9.01.12 on prem.

I have a new ticket from some users asking me to add two new codes to the ABC code on the Items form: D and N. I am extremely hesitant to make this change as this will obviously break (unintentionally) Infor code as there are now ABC codes it doesn't know what to do with.

Has anyone made a change like this before? What issues did you run into? Is this a good idea?

I got a little more information about this. It sounds like we are not using the ABC codes correctly (if at all). The goal is to use them more effectively. The issue is new items entered into the system need an ABC code, but they don't know which code it should be. The thought was to add new ABC codes D and N (N being New) which allows the users to add items and have them "exempted" from the cycle count. This doesn't sound like it is the correct way to do this. I am still waiting on more information from the requestors, but does anyone have any better ideas on how this could be achieved?
