What are the Document, File, and SMARTHELP document types for?

These three (Document, File, and SMARTHELP) seem to be out of the box document types in our environment. Does anyone know what different purpose each serves? We are mainly creating custom document types for use in LN context or within IDM, so I'm trying to also understand where these OOTB ones fit in.
