New Form vs Data View

Good morning,

I am very new to Syteline and I am finding new things everyday so I am hoping someone can give me some advice. I was starting to set up a form that is a grid view in order to have one of my users able to Export to Excel from this grid. I found a video on Data Views that was a simple way to set up this type of view. Which would be better way to go... Form OR Data View?

You decision is based on the data and it's use. A grid will give you a dataset that you can use components on the form to filter the data. However, every person using the grid will get the same dataset. Dataview would be a better choice if you have several that have basically the same data needs, but slightly different. In this case, you can design a dataview and then let users personalize the result set to not include some data they don't care for as well as save filters, etc. There's no wrong answer or better answer. Both will give you data in a grid type display that can be exported to excel. Both should be about the same in terms of creating.

If the UDFShortText1 is not already in the IDO, you need to add it there first. Then you need to go to Dataviews Setup and click the IDO Setup button for your dataview. In the window that opens, you need to check the 'Selected' checkbox next to the UDFShortText1 property in the Properties grid. Once you do that, unload global objects and that property will be available for the dataview.

My apologies, I answered too quickly without completely reading through. When you create a UDF binding field on a form, that field is actually being created in a separate UserDefinedFields table. You don't need to create a new IDO, but when you create the dataview, you need to add another IDO Collection (in this case, UserDefinedFields) and create a join between that IDO and the SLItems IDO (Link By RowPointer=RowId). Then make sure the property UDFVCSD1 is selected in the IDO Setup and you can use it in your dataview.

Thank you 240081 for the advice. I have decided to use a dataView for my purpose but I have run into an issue. I am using the IDO SLItems for the dataView. On my Items form, I have made an Edit component bound to property UDFShortText1. I was expecting to see this property on the property list for my dataView, but it is not. How do I get this property on my dataView?

I can't add to the IDO as it locked by Syteline. The UDFShortText1 is a binding field, is there another way to have it accessible for the dataview?

I should clarify that UDFShortText1 is a binding field on my Items form.
