opera SQL backup crashing with error 64 on new sql server

Suspect its something to do with the unc path as the backup works if the opera data path is drive letter, ie d:operasqldata but not if its \sqlserveroperasqldata.

opera was detached and attached to new server to move data across

SQL backup will backup the company but opera does the .bak file then crashes later even when excluding pdf files. no document management and have used same sql 2005 as old server.

company is over 6gb.

smaller companies backup normally. files set to auto grow.

Any suggestions.
