utilization of resources based on Orders or forecasts??
csepulveda
We are looking to determine the impact of large quotes on our future capacity to determine capital planning. we currently load our engineering masters out 6 months or less but have long term agreements for years. these agreements are for general quantities that are not made firm until we get within a certain horizon. We create the work orders when we get these firm quantities.
I would like to know if a couple of things are possible.
first, run a schedule based upon all of our current customer orders.
second, run a schedule based upon a forecast for what-if scenarios like quote packages.

Great question! To my knowledge, it is not possible to run scheduler based on quotes or a forecast. But I hope I am wrong! This would be an incredibly useful tool.
One option would be to create Work Orders in Test mode and run scheduler off of that.
Let's hope someone out there has a better answer than me.

Try testing:
Concurrent Scheduler.
Edit/Insert Line
Create Schedule, say, QUOTES
Highlight the line for the QUOTES schedule
File/Select and schedule work orders...
Select QUOTES from Schedule ID
Double-click the magnifying glass on Work Order ID column
Click the Binoculars on the resulting search screen
Enter "Q%" in the Type search row, or Unreleased in Status, or whatever you are looking for
Pick from the resulting list
Run the Concurrent Scheduler for that Schedule.
Display that schedule in the Scheduling Window.
I don't have time to test this, but its a possibility for what you are trying to do. Remember, you have to have Run hrs in the operations of whatever you are looking at, or it won't work. Will it schedule quotes that are unreleased? Don't know. Worth a try.

Here is what I do for this. It does require that engineering masters exist for what you are quoting. Copy database into a sandbox. Change planning policy in part maintenance for the top level part(s) that are quoted to master schedule. Set the master schedule to match the quoted deliveries. Run MRP. [if you do not have a what if schedule set up that you run an infinite schedule in, then you need to set one up] Run the infinite schedule and include planned orders. Under scheduling select the throughput window. in that window, select utilization. you can then look at the infinite schedule in any date range you want. This gives you what the load will be to complete all of the current and planned work on time. You can then match your capacity plans to take care of the load.

JSthorpe, I'm not sure if I understand your process fully. I am running version 6.3.8 and do not see an option in the Part Maintenance window for planning policy. Are you maybe referring to the material planning window?? any chance you could take some screen shots of how you would set this up?? I am interested in how you have your schedule preferences set for both the standard and infinite schedule.

We have a fairly simple solution to handling forecast orders, but we are not utilizing the planning features so I am not sure how this will impact the scheduler. Forecast orders are entered with an arbitrary prefix (like 'F') on the order number, and the order is placed on-hold. When the order is firmed, the 'F' is deleted and the order is released.
When running MRP, you have the option of excluding on-hold customer orders, so you can choose if you want forecast orders considered.
Does this help with scheduling?
Good luck!

JSthorpe... I found the "master schedule" option in part maint!
We are currently set to "Discrete" I read the descriptions but they seemed similar... do you have a better description than is given in the help screen??

Set the planning policy to master schedule. Then in the MPW, go to FILE/ Master Production Schedule. In the pop up for that, you can input dates that match up to the forecasted orders. Use the schedule date and schedule qty to input how you want to see the forecast.

Kevin,
If you set something to master schedule MRP will put demands against the part but WILL NOT plan supply for the part. You have to master schedule the supply. So make sure you do not change the planning policy in the live database.

Ok, am I understanding correctly that I will have to insert a supply to match each demand??
is there a way to do this on a mass scale?? I have thousands of demands I would like to do this against....

Jim, I tried calling you today to discuss this further.
I would like to ask the group one more time about this and be a bit more specific about what I want to accomplish.
I build to stock. i have long term agreements that go out years.
I only have work orders created for the next 6 months or so.
I would like the scheduler to show what my shop capacity would be if the workorders were created to match my full demand. this is for capital planning.
I created an infinite capacity schedule and checked the box for "include planned orders". when i do this I only get released workorders and "planned" orders which are created manually in the material planning window for each part. is there any way to make this work automatically based on customer orders that do not have supply?? most of my customer orders already have engineering masters created.

Not sure what you mean by " 'planned' orders which are created manually in the material planning window".
I haven't tried this before, so I followed the instruction...I'm baffled. I can't find the button for "include planned orders"--where is it?
Here's from the User's Guide, 7.0. None of my schedules are showing any Planned orders scheduling...
User Guide, Manufacturing Page 6-29
Viewing Scheduled Planned Orders
Use the Scheduled Planned Orders option to view all of the scheduled planned orders for selected
Schedule IDs.
1. Highlight a Schedule ID in the Concurrent Scheduler window. This cannot be the Standard
schedule.
2. Select Scheduled Planned Orders from the File menu.
The Scheduled Planned Orders dialog box appears. The table window within the dialog box
displays the list of all planned orders that VISUAL processed in the Schedule you selected.
3. To remove a planned order from the schedule, highlight that order in the table window and click the
Remove from Schedule button.

mr thorpe seems to have straightened me out... it's always the simplest things you overlook! For future reference MRP won't plan when your order policy is set to "not planned"
in the words of homer simpson.... DOH!
I will report back tomorrow with the results of my full test...
