Remote Access for Visual 6.5.3

Wondering if anyone out there has or is planning to implement remote access for Visual users outside the LAN. I'm figuring VPN or leveraging Windows Server 2008 R2 in the future for DirectAccess would be good ways to go, but neither is really an option for us at the present time. Anyone else out there had luck with alternate / cheaper methods?

I have a Dratek Vigor 2800 router for my VPN, my user has a wireless router with broadband in France, he connected to Visual and also used Crystal reports with no problems

Hmm, that's encouraging! main problem at the moment is sketchy ADSL service (which may turn into cable later on), I can get an average of perhaps 40-60kbps over the fledgling VPN we have up...Visual does in fact work over the connection, though rather slowly..

Look into Citrix... Tolerates / recovers from "weird" connection problems... Keep an eye on your latency between sites as Citrix gets cludgy when latency exceeds 250ms... then again what options work well at those latency levels?

Actually, our vendor partner recommends 2X Application server (similar to Citrix, just cheaper). Have yet to test..

We use a Cisco ASA firewall/router and VPN in then use a Remote Desktop connection right to the Visual server. I can give you more detail but it works outstanding.

As of this writing, we have our connection restabilized, so we can now utilize VPN with some level of reliability, but have the expected issue of speed due to not yet running TS locally and serving up Visual over the VPN rather than serving locally and viewing using the VPN. We switched to the Linksys/Cisco RV014 with good results so far as far as ease of VPN - only thing it doesn't pick up automatically is local WINS address - with that manually specified, we can get at anything not active-directory controlled.

Do you necessarily have to use Windows server as the VPN server in order to establish active directory connections over the VPN (i.e. logging into a domain) or can you also do that via an appliance such as a VPN gateway? My understanding is that the only difference is you can have the VPN workload on the appliance rather than the server this way, but I have not yet been able to provide domain-level logins via the built-in PPTP gateway function..

When we were running 6.4.1, it was possible to simply Remote Desktop into the server, log in and use Visual (I opened port 3389 on company firewall and pointed it to the Visual Server and setup Remote Desktop with a 5-user license from Microsoft). We just upgraded to 6.5.3 and noticed that while we can run Visual via Remote Desktop (or the server console for that matter), we get a blank pop-up window with a red 'x' when we try to save Sales Orders. Anyone else successfull running 6.5.3 via Remote Desktop to the server? I submitted on incident requrest and got a reply that this approach wasn't officially supported even thought it might work.

I've had great success with logmein, theie print functionality and the three levels of security make for a slick package.

You can also set up some virtual computers just for users to log into. Use Remote Desktop on any Windows computer and route your external IPs to the IP of the virtual pc and if folder redirection is turned on they get exactly what they normally have when at their own office pc.

Another option is VNC, but screen refresh is not as good as RDP.
