Upgrade to 6.5.3
unknown
Hi,
We are looking to move from Visual 6.4.1 to 6.5.3 (with SQL Server) by the end of the year and I would like to have some feedback from people who had started or done that kind of upgrade.
Thanks

We are in the process of testing 6.5.3 and hope to go live at the end of Oct. or Nov. We do not use all the functionality of Visual so don't know how much I would have to offer. One thing we are looking at is the Window Editor, but I'm getting conflicting information. Some documentation says the Object Nationalizer needs to be purchased separately but some users on the VMIUG group say it should be imbedded already with 6.5.3 files. We can't find them. Does anyone else have any information regarding the Object Nationalizer?

Unless things changed in 6.5.3 (we're on 6.5.2), it's in the runtime folder. The file name is "cni40". The icon is a globe on top of a yellow square. FYI, no users can be in the specific module you are making changes to.

Depending on which style of menu you use, the Gupta Object Nationalizer is in Admin -> Window Editor.

If you use serialization and tracable materials, there could be some challenges. It is a little stricter which is good, but any mistakes made before will cause discrepancies between on hand quantities and available trace quantities. We curently have over 1200 parts that are taking over 30 minutes a piece to fix.

interested in hearing more about serial / lot trace which GSSI is thinking of turning on [653}

We're only in the pilot stages of our first install of 6.5.3 (base install, not migrating from another Visual version), but so far serial/lot trace will be a boon as we do a fair amount of customer returns fo credit / refurb / upgrade, etc.
The only advice I could offer is to define how you want your serialization to work as much as you can process-wise prior to thinking about implementation - we ended up running into some interesting conundrums based on where we are serializing and when it's captured. Moreover, since you can serialize sub assemblies, final assemblies, lots, cartons, boxes, pallets, etc - having those requirements up front will save your vendor partner some headaches
