Since we have the opportunity to re-do our names/codes for requesting locations and inventory locations, I was wondering what others have done. We are a big company with many locations through the US. Currently, we don't need a robust build out of requesting locations as all of our purchases will be going to a central warehouse or location as they're all large capital purchases. But, I would like to build for the future.
Inventory Locations
So, for now, our Inventory Location codes will actually be based on zip code followed by an alpha character. For instance, if we have five facilities in zip code 12345, then we would have location 1 as 12345A, location 2 as 12345B, etc... The benefit of this is that the facility may change accounting hierarchy, so we aren't relying on that, but the PHYSICAL place won't move often. If it does, it is generally in the same zip code so can keep the same location code.
Requesting Locations
For requesting locations, we don't really have much of a need for these, honestly. Our large capital purchases aren't going to be delivered to a department or par location. So, currently we just have a few generice requesting locations built because the system requires it. When migrating to CSF, we aren't sure if we want to keep this or not. If so, we do want to plan for the future so now is a good chance to redesign these codes as well. We are thinking something similar to the inventory location but then also add the department code at the end. So, using the above example, we would have 12345A1107 where 12345A was the inventory location and 1107 is the department.
Thoughts or maybe examples how others are coming up with their requesting and inventory location codes?
