Labeling Software Options

We are utilizing the on-prem version of Visual 9.0.8. We are also using the Loftware Print Server (LPS) as our labeling solution (part labels, inventory labels, etc.). As I am sure most/all of you know, LPS is being retired. Does anyone else use a different labeling software for your company's labeling needs? Just looking to see what is out there and how they are being used.

Hi Jesse,

We're also running on-prem VISUAL 9.0.8. We use NiceLabel LMS across our NA operations.

NiceLabel was acquired by Loftware so maybe we'll see some native support for it in VISUAL in the future.

Hi Jesse,

Per Richard's post, Infor will have a solution for you using Loftware's NiceLabel once you upgrade to Visual 10.0.0 (and install the Q4 service pack), There is no mention of the cost of the solution, if you are not already licensed to use Loftware Print Server with Visual. We do not have an Infor license to use the older Loftware Print Server software, and do not own that software.

Where I worked previously, I developed a custom shipping and material management system for Visual Manufacturing. That system uses Zebra branded printers that uses the Zebra ZPL printer language. The programs I created would send raw ZPL printer code to the printers whenever a receiving, material movement, finished goods, or customer specific label needed to be printed. The ZPL printer language is not too hard to master, and there are visualizers on the internet, as well as built into the web interface in some Zebra printers to help design the labels.

After 16 years at the previous company, I moved on to Meadville Forge. Meadville Forge had been using a custom shipping and material management system that was developed by TrueFit over the course of 14 or so years. Their solution uses Zebra branded printers that use the Zebra EPL printer language. The solution sends raw EPL printer code to printers whenever a material movement, finished goods, or customer specific label needed to be printed. I could not find a usable EPL printer code visualizer, so after a few months trying to manually create new labels in the EPL language, I ended up creating an EPL visualizer for my company to reduce the time needed to design new label formats for customer label requirements. I also completely recreated the custom Shipping application so that it would be compatible with Visual 9.0.8,and extended their material management system to also support receiving with label printing, and various other functionality, again sending raw EPL code to the printers to print labels.

Does any one use BarTender or TEKLYNX or another label program?

We use BarTender. There is no official integration, but we are able to use files to trigger printing from Visual using the BarTender automation software.

Thank you. Was there any significant changes to Visual in order to get that to work? I know with the LPS, Visual would spit out a .pas file that the LPS software would scan in order to receive the information and print the label. It almost sounds like BarTender would be similar.

We set up macros to place text files on the file server. The BarTender Commander/Integration Service will watch for the file and print labels based on the file name, location, and contents.

Has anyone used the PowerForms program from Loftware? How has the integration been with Visual? NiceLabel has some nice options, but it is above and beyond what we do with labels. From looking at descriptions, the PowerForms would be more than sufficient for what we do.

Hi Jesse,

We are currently evaluating NiceLabel and are leaning toward using PowerForms now and then when we upgrade to Visual 10, making use of integration between NiceLabel and Visual.
