Printing hanging on 64bit win7 machines

Has anyone experienced this? Weve just upgraded 7 workstations in an OPII site to Win 7 64 bit & every now & then, opera hangs when printing a report. It can be any report, or creating any pdf document & their only option is to ctrl+alt+del

Weve discovered that theres an exe file being run called splwow64.exe. Weve investigated this & this exe file basically converts information from a 32 bit program (e.g Pegasus) to 64 bit, ready for printing, & this is where its hanging.

There's the known issue where on Windows 7 X64 you have to create a new 'PDF1' port for the Opera PDF printer and also set the permissions on it so that everyone has full access, have you done that on each one ?

The only other thing I can think of is HP PCL6 drivers, I would use PCL5e instead.

I have seen hanging in areas like batch processing and if you click on the date and company icon this makes it 'come back to life' therefore avoiding having to ctrl alt delete

We have a customer with the same problem, we have done as Alan suggests i.e. creating a new PDF1 port and that now allows them to print, however it is still not allowing them to do anything where creating a pdf in the background is involved e.g. they can print invoices and credit notes but they cant create sent to spooler control as a pdf image, nor can they run a period end where a reversing journal is having to be produced hence producing a pdf in the background. Pegasus have advised us, again as Alan suggests, it is a PCL6 driver but they have suggested HP Laserjet II. As we dont look after their network we have asked their Network guys to do that on our behalf, we are awaiting the result.

Hi, thanks for your webnotes. Yes, weve performed the PDF on port 1 solution on all workstations , but this hasnt resolved it & its this splwow64.exe that its having the problem with. You can see it when runnning file mon. Its just so intermittent, that its difficult to test. A workstation reboot seems to resolve it for a few hours, then it reappears

So we're a bit stumped!

One known issue: Microsoft Office OneNote 2010 (2007 as well?) adds a printer using port NUL:. This is the default port used by the Amyuni driver also. If Office is installed first, the Amyuni PDF printer does not install correctly (classic symptom is that the Opera II PDF Printer is assigned to port LPT1: instead).

Fix: delete both printers. Go to the Ports tab on another printer & delete the NUL: port. Uninstall Opera II client. Reboot (possibly not required). Install Opera II Client. Repair install on Office 2010/One Note.
