SMPRMT Listbox validation order

I'm running into an issue with an SMPRMT listbox and the way the validation procedure is executed. It seems to be executed after the right-click menu (if one is present) is displayed, which is causing a minor problem for me.

I want the right-click menu to be a context menu for the item that I have selected in the listbox, but I can't determine if an item is selected in the listbox until that listbox's validation procedure is executed. By this logic, the user must first "left-click" an item in the listbox, and then they can right-click it to get the context menu.

Is there any reason why the validation procedure could not be executed BEFORE the right-click menu is displayed? I know my question may be a little confusing, so let me know if I need to elaborate more.
