Total Cost w/Burden Field
collinajong-andoh
We are currently upgrading from 6.5.4 to 7.1.2. In 6.5.4, we used a macro to calculate a burdened cost, but now in 7.1.2 wish to use the Total Cost w/ Burden field top drive many of our custom costing reports.
Is that field stored in any table, or is it calculated only when opening Part Maintenance?
Thanks.

Mike,
Do you mean you want to use the cost fields in Part Maintenance to calculate costs including burden? If so, I think that total cost is just a calculated field. Those particular cost fields are designed to be populated when you run the Update Standard Costs utility, and are primarily used in Visual costing when you adjust parts into a warehouse. Of course you can enter data into those cost fields manually too. If you are using those fields in a custom report you can use them any way you want, which may be what you are doing.
Or are you wanting to utilize the burden functionality within Visual? If so, there are different ways to have Visual calculate burden for you.
Labor Burden can be determined either by Resource ID or by Work Order Operations. You set that preference in Application Global. If you already have zillions of masters and work orders it will probably be easier for you to use shop resource burden rates.
The labor burden is calculated at the time a labor ticket is completed and it will use the burden rate entered in that particular shop resource at that time (or in that operation at that time if you chose to use work order operations instead of resources to calculate burden).
For fabricated parts the Burden Cost in Part Maintenance is for estimated costs and will also affect parts that are adjusted in.
The Issue Burden in Part Maintenance is used and recorded during material issues.
When a material return is done the issue burden remains on the work order.
Issue Burden can only be removed by deleting the inventory transaction.
The Purchase Burden in Part Maintenance is applied when a PO receipt is entered.
Purchase burden acts differently than issue burden; if the receipt is returned the burden is also returned.
Hope this helps a little.
