Opera 3 SQL SE insall, SQL on separate server

Hi, we havent really done anything with SQL SE, so apologies if were a bit late to the table & this has been asked before...

Has anyone installed & configured OPera 3 SQL on one server & have the SQL on a separate server?

Weve attempted this on our first site, just to get demo data working & at first...(weve installed it on three machines in our office no problem)

At first we couldn't get the SAM to communicate with SQL, then realised we had to put the port number in the SAM at the end of the SQL instance.

Once we overcame that hurdle, we thought we were nearly there, but when you launch the Opera client on the server....nothing happens. We log in as ADMIN, click ok & then it just minimizes at the bottom & you cant do anythin with it, other than task manager out of it

So were at a crossroads whether to abandon seperating the SQL & Opera & put them both on the same server

Secondly if we were to get this to work & this is what several partners have done - have you seen any performance issues with this setup?

Ive asked Pegasus but I thought it may be best to ask on here too.

Any help/pointers would be much appreciated

James, yes we have an SE site like this. In fact they have a user acceptance testing setup with SE on an app server and a separate SQL box, and the same thing replicated for their 'live' system. I don't recall any issues like the one you're having. We were very thorough with making sure the prerequisites were in place before starting. They are heavily nominal ledgerfinancials based with 10+ companies and low transaction volume.

We had a client setup with SQL server separate from the Opera server, and it ran well. For your connection/running issue, I assume that you have DTC and Net.TCP running OK and that the client running does not close the Opera service? That is the only thing I can think of.

In terms of how it ran, it was fine in the test environment but the live had around half a dozen instances in SQL running other programs and it appeared that the disk access caused performance issues in that setup. I stress that this was their setup, rather than it being necessarily a SLQ SE problem.

cheers Tony, yeas all three servcies are running. WE had to elevate the opera service so that it had admin credentials & all of them dont stop either....its really weird, its like it logs in...then minmises & if you do a alt + tab, you can see it is just sat at the login screen, but you cant maximise it or anything

Also worth checking that DTC is communicating correctly. I had to download some tools from Microsoft to test out DTC. Found there was an issue with GUIDs and security IDs that messed up the comms.

thansk for all the pointers guys. We litrealy wiped everything off, even the SQL databases & started again. As both firewalls were switched off, we didnt think we still had to configure the rules for the ports. But as a belt & braces job we did.....and it all worked in the end. not sure if this was the fix as their IT guy confirmed what we thought - if it was siwtched off, putting rules in place wouldnt make any difference. but maybe it did?
