Summary
Make the Telephone Type configurable so clients can define their own types instead of using delivered values. The State of Michigan has specific business requirements to define mobile phone numbers specific to allowing emergency text notifications. The delivered values do not meet the needs of many of the external systems with which we share employee information. Now that many employees are remote, they use Microsoft Teams exclusively for work calls and we would like to indicate that as a type. The free form Description field does not meet our needs as we cannot control the values entered for reporting and external files.
Workaround
We created a configured Contact Type field with our own values. We then hid the Telephone Type on the Contact form, on the Contact list, and on all actions which include phone number. We added Contact Type to the Contact form, the Contact list, and all actions which include phone number. It's an extraordinary amount of configuration to maintain when a simple enhancement could address this issue.
