How are others utilizing the Purchase Major/Minor Classes on IC11.1? We are researching best practice and would appreciate hearing how others have built out these classifications and for what primary purpose(s) they are used.

We utilize the PC Major and Minor to cross reference to our IC04 GL Categories, Issue account and taxability. I am attaching our file.

When we first implemented Lawson the consultants recommended we mirror the GL category as well. Then we could run reports and group items by class. But honestly we haven't really used purchasing classes for reporting at all. For a while we were using them to limit access to specific items. For instance, if a doc wanted to use a non-standard glove and we didn't want that glove available to the general requester. We would assign the class to the item and then assign all classes to the requesters for the OR. But then you have to assign all the classes except the one for that glove to all other requesters. Got to be difficult to manage so we stopped doing it. However, we may revisit this soon because we'll be bringing another hospital on-board over the next year and there will undoubtedly be some items transferred from their system that we won't want our current users to order.
