Secondary Bins
todd-brown
Okay, I attended a meeting yesterday with our logistics/supply chain staff and was told that one of their biggest issues with Lawson is that they cannot seem to get 'replinishment' to work properly. So here is what they want to accomplish. Let me know if anyone out here is doing this.
Currently we do not utilize secondary bin locations. We have the need to start doing that now. The idea is to have a secondary bin and primary bin for some items. We want to always pick from the primary bin, but receive into the secondary bin. Then, maybe daily, have a Lawson job run to tell us what items need to move from the secondary bin to the primary bin for that replinishment. To me, an IT person, that sounds simple. However not knowing what all the Lawson capabilities are I figured I would try and find out.
Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks

You "could" set up an additional inventory location with only the items/bins that are 'secondary' and point the replenishment of your main inventory to this location, leaving the "From Location" on the req's the same as it is now.
You then would set the items up in this secondary location to replenish from your primary vendor.
One of the IC14* jobs replenishes by requisitions to another location...
We don't have that set up, but I remember we looked at it at one time but didn't do it. We moved towards a more JIT situation with our vendor, ordering more frequently.

You can use IC38 to set up bin replenishment within the same location and IC138 to run the replenishment.
From Lawson Form Help
IC38
Use Bin Reorder Policy (IC38.1) to replenish picking bins from larger storage bins. Use this form to update bin reorder policy information at a location. Reorder information defines the reorder method (Order Policy), when to reorder (Reorder Point), order calculation (Reorder Quantity Code), and the order quantity (Reorder Quantity).
**Processing Effect
The reorder information maintained on this form is used by IC138 (Bin Replenishment Report) to list item bins that need replenishing. This report calculates bin replenishment quantities and optionally creates unreleased bin transfer document(s).
**More Information
You can review, adjust (if necessary), and release bin transfer documents created in IC138 (Bin Replenishment Report) in IC90.1 (Detail Bin Transfer Entry). When you release transfer documents, items are transferred from the larger storage bin (Replenish From Bin) to the item's picking bin (Bin).
IC138
Run Bin Replenishment Report (IC138) to print a report of item bins that need replenishment from another bin within the same location. Bin replenishment needs are based on bin reorder information setup in IC38.1 (Bin Reorder Policy). This program provides the option to create unreleased bin transfer documents. Unreleased bin transfer documents can be reviewed, adjusted, and released in IC90.1 (Detail Bin Transfer Entry).

Okay great info. I will check these forms out. What about on the receiving side. If we are doing this replinishment would be want to receive into the secondary bins?

David's idea may work better in that case. I think receiving will always put the stock in the preferred bin by default. Your receiving folks would have to manually change the bin at time of receipt to put it in the secondary bin. And if you make the secondary bin your preferred bin your RQC orders will pull from the secondary. By creating a separate location/bin as your secondary you can run vendor replenishment (IC140) to that and keep your req locations pointed to the primary location/bin for picking. Then run IC141 to replenish from the secondary to the primary.

Hmmm, interesting. You would think the design of this would be such that product would keep rotating from secondary to primary instead of always receiving new product to the picking bin and keeping the product in secondary bins just sitting there. At least to me.
Thanks

Going with Jon's idea, perhaps changing the functionality of the Bin via Usage Type on IC01.3
I know you can have the same item in 2 different bins, but I just don't know how to maintain it if it's not in the preferred bin other than viewing it in IC42 and doing bin transfers in IC90.
I suppose you coud set up 2 bins, one in IC01.3 to allow issues only and one to allow receipts only. Not sure how the system knows on the replenishment end unless its just off that usage type to order for the additional bin only. Would take some testing but that may work as well.
Jon's set up seems more straightforward than creating a whole seperate inventory location, but just not sure transactionally how it all would work. Whereas with adding a seperate location, I know how to make that work.

"I suppose you coud set up 2 bins"
that should read 2 bin TYPES in IC01.3

I wonder too, if you set up a bin usage type with Allow Receipts = N and assign that to the preferred bin, how that would affect receiving in PO30. Would the receipt automatically find that the item exists in that secondary bin or would the receiving clerk get an error each time and have to do a walk through to select the bin for receipt? Our test server is down so I can't test the scenario.

Now that sounds logical. I'll test that.

I know we tried to figure out how to have our forms supplier store the forms at their site. The PO quantity was too much to store in our small warehouse. We played with the IC12 replenishment option *IC12.2, utilizing the Replenishment from Company, Location and Bin. So that item would be restocked from another bin in our system. Item was replenished from the receiving location / bin. IC22 allows for transfers as well. We never implemented this process, but I have attached an outline of the process we worked on.
