Full physical inventory using MSCM and multiple handheld devices
Legacy Contributor
We have 10 fairly large inventory locations, the largest is our main OR with more than 21,000 distinct items totaling more that 87,000 individual eachs.
We want to be able to count everything using a number of handhelds concurrently with MSCM cycle counting.
The only way we can think to accomplish this is to setup multiple selectid's in IC70 and then put one select id on each handheld and go count.
But we are unsure of the best way to break up the items to multiple selectid's.
Ideally we would have ALL the items on ALL the handhelds and then sum the extract from each into a single count and variance analysis.
We are looking for suggestions on the best way to count these large locations quickly and accurately using MSCM

Is the reason for breaking up the inventory into multiple select IDs because it takes a lot of time to download 21K items in one select ID? I've not done a PI on such a large number of items so I don't know how long that would take to run IC170 and IC270 and then wait for the counts to appear on the device.

The reason is we have a very limited time to count. So we need as many people as possible to count simultaneously. If we load all the items into one selectid we can only count with one handheld, as MSCM will overwrite the counts from the others and only the last one submitted will remain.

On our last PI we built bin groups in IC15.3 and used those groups as a select ID parameter. We just pulled all the IC12 data and broke it into zones by bin sequence and created an upload form for IC15.3. Each counter was assigned a group/zone, and that seemed to work very well and kept folks from walking all over each other. We only have one main inventory location with 18,000+ items and it takes about 4 hours to finish the PI process.

Thanks Denny. I will suggest that.
I think one of their issues is that being an OR, items are stocked in multiple places, but I like your suggestion.

The uploads won't overwrite each other unless people are counting the same bins. We use sticky notes to mark off where people started their counts so the person behind them doesn't recount what they've done.

Thanks Jon. I did not know that. It could be our solution.

We find that this makes it much simpler and we can freeze inventory in zones instead of the entire warehouse. If you do freeze everything, you can delete the freeze on zones as they are completed and flex staff to other zones if needed to speed things along.

You have an error in your MSCM. Our Central Supplys all do PI with MSCM - select ID freezes the four walls and they count them using several handhelds at once.
The only issue is one item in multiple locations - the scanner picks the first one, you need to look at the bin and "NEXT" to the correct bin to count. This makes certain it goes to the correct page on IC72.
Once the counts are in the Director goes into IC72 to verify everything's done - but that's it.

Sorry - I've been frozen for a few min. Jon's cleared this up.

One problem with freezing zones though, is that now you have multiple variance reports and have to combine them all together somehow to see how far off your entire inventory was.

This is all very helpful.
I am not sure how materials has these locations binned, but clearly multiple bins sounds like the solution.

Yes, tapping Next rather than scanning the next item is best. Not only does it make sure you hit each item on the page but if something was moved to another location in the storeroom and the bin wasn't changed in IC12, you'll catch that.
