FACTS on a MAC
jeff-christie
Sorry if this has come up, I do see a KB entry on this about windx working on a MAC if installed in a DOS partition, but I have a customer who just bought a new MAC and he was wondering if FACTS 7.5 would run on it. Not sure of the model, other than it's brand new, but wondering if anyone had any experience with this, how much of an effort is involved? Maybe the newer models have something that might make this easier?
Thanks, Bob

Just had another request from a customer wondering if he could buy an apple computer to replace his cuurent pc and would it work in FACTS 7.7. Is this possible? Sounds like it is, but how much of a pain to make it happen? Thanks, Bob

Bob,
I don't have anyone running it native, not sure if that can be done or not, but I do have a couple of people running it using Parallels. Parallels is simply a windows emulator that runs on the MAC O/S. Both of the people I have doing this are salespeople, so they are not really banging on it. Because of that I can't really speak to the speed degradation, I would assume there is some. I have also heard you can do this using WINE, but have never tried. There is also the solution of using some sort of VMWARE, but that again is not really running Windx on the MAC, and there are probably going to be some speed issues there too. If they insist on the MAC, one of these might work for them.

On macs with intel cpus, windows is not emulated, so speed is as good or better than on a PC. What suffers is high intensity graphics programs like gaming because it's using special drivers to run the windows desktop in a window on the mac. This doesn't really affect business apps like FACTS. Parallels would probably be the mac user's pick because it is the most seamless integration. VirtualBox by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle) is a free solution that supports multiple os's (although you must still purchase the os).

Two methods:
1) install Fusion or Parallels and run Windows underneath Mac OS.
2) If they have a windows terminal server, download the RDC client for Mac and connect via Remote Desktop Connection. We implemented this method at a client that recently upgraded to v7.7. FACTS runs on a SCO Unix OS5 (!THAT was a trick!) and the Windows Terminal Server has the WindX client installed and available to all desktops. Several salesmen with macbook pros access FACTS through RDC.

Slightly off topic... FACTS 7.7 on SCO 5 that (last I knew) didn't have large file support? Do tell how you accomplished this feat!?
Did you revert to pre-EFF files?

Had to re-create them as EFF files with the OPT=1 flag, limiting them to 2Gb. Also there is a gotcha in the data-dictionary update:
pvx/lib/_dict/dd_updt
If the file is empty it deletes the file and then re-creates it.
Line 3030 causes file to get erased if the file is empty. It then transparently errors out trying to re-create it as opt=2, effectively leaving the file deleted. This leads to error 12s in the application.
line 2212 modified corrects this condition.
