Problems with PIM

Has anyone had any experience of running PIM on a Windows 2008 Server?
We have recently upgraded a customer and they are now running Opera II on a virtual server using Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. We have re-installed PIM onto this server but we are unable to get it to send emails. Users can log into PIM OK, can send instant messages and receive POPUPs, but for some reason all the emails generated by PIM remain as unsent. Any help would be appreciated.
