Is it possible to change the "Eng ID/Lot ID" on an Engineering Master?
marvin-schultz
We have several Engineering Masters that we did not specify anything in the Eng ID/Lot ID field in the Work Order Header screen, so they were saved with the default value of "0".
Is it possible to change the value in that field after the Engineering Master has been created and saved?
Since the box is grayed out, I'm thinking that it's not possible, but I thought I would ask. I'm trying to find a way that would be easier than to create hundreds of new Engineering Masters.

You cannot change it once it has been saved. Typically you want to start with Zero and have that as your main engineering master for a part. In part maintenance you specify the default engineering ID and that is used when cutting work orders however when manually creating them you can specify an alternate ID. If you have alternate production methodologies to make the part then you can make number 1, 2, 3 and so on as alternate IDs. Essentially the unique Key the system uses for an Engineering ID is the Part number and the Engineering ID.
Why do you need to modify that field? What’s wrong with leaving it at Zero?

If you absolutely needed to have a different Lot ID for a master, you could just start a master with the desired Lot ID and then Edit/'copy from' the old master to pull in the routing. Then, as Scott states, you can go into Part Maintenance and set the default Eng Master to this new Lot ID.

Thank you Scott and Jason.
Scott- we need to modify the field because when the engineering masters were first created, we had a primary vendor as well as 2 or 3 other vendors that would produce the same products, depending on the work load. We created the default engineering master with "0", and alternate engineering masters with vendor abbreviations in the lot ID. Due to changes in our business, we no longer consider that vendor to be the primary. We were hoping to change the lot ID to reflect the same naming convention as our other vendors, for consistency.
Jason, I considered that option, but then there would be excessive engineering masters in our already congested database.
Thanks again.

Christy,
I understand you have a process and want to keep with it but I have to wonder if using an engineering master is the best way to define your qualified/primary/alternate vendors or not. Since you’re using an engineering master I’m assuming that you start to make the product and then send it out for some processing and then get it back in. If that’s the case then you may be able to use a single engineering master and better utilize the outside service functionality. If the outside vendor is manufacturing the entire product from start to finish then you’re actually purchasing a finished product and shouldn’t require an Engineering master. Obviously, this approach would require someone to analyze your business process and possible re-engineer it. If that’s a deal breaker then as a last resort you can use SQL and the back end to copy the Work Order, Requirement and Operations Tables (plus the binary ones if required) into a newly numbered Engineering master.

Christy,
Once you have the new masters created, you could delete the old masters if there's no need to hold on to them.

What about "Rename & Merge"?

Rename and Merge only does a new Base ID (at least the version I have installed).

Scott, we are not the typical user of Visual Manufacturing. Our Infor consultant was baffled by our unique and complex business requirements, but was able to provide solutions to make the product work for us. We are not a physical manufacturing facility. We use multiple vendors to purchase numerous parts that are shipped to a final production facility (there are many), prior to being shipped to various distribution warehouses. We create engineering masters to produce work orders and outside service purchase orders. It gets more detailed and complex, but this is the nuts and bolts of it. Ultimately, we're able to utilize the tool to work for us.
Jason, I will offer your suggestion to the planners who actually create the engineering masters (I'm just the admin), and let them decide if that's the route they want to take. Thank you!
pseebach, I've not heard about "Rename & Merge". I'll research that and see if it's a possibility.
