Migration from Capital Gold Payroll to Pegasus Opera3 VFP

Good morning all,
I have a customer who we have Opera3 VFP Financials which we support and manage, but they also have Capital Gold Payroll (which we didn't supply and they have been renewing this with Pegasus directly themselves for years).

They have just advised me this morning that Capital Gold is being retired at the end of March and that they've been advised to migrate to Pegasus Opera3…..

Just wanting to ask you guys, does anyone know if there is a migration from Capital Gold to Opera3 OR is it to be treated as setup of a new payroll?

Would really welcome any advice.

Hi Claire,

We had a customer on Capital Gold Payroll who we have moved to Opera 3 VFP. They were a relatively small payroll and opted to complete a lot of work for themselves so created the employee records manually.

I don't believe there is a migration process for it (I could be wrong!) but the newer versions of Opera 3 allow for employee records to be imported which may help speed up the process.

Thanks so much Alex for coming back so quickly.
I'd be hoping to keep the payroll for this site separate from their current Opera3 VFP so buy payroll outright which means can put the latest version on and use the importer but I have never dealt with Capital Gold myself, how is the data held in it and is it easy enough to get the employee data out into excel?

I'm by no means an expert as we only had one customer with it but it is fairly intuitive and easy to use. I'm not sure about an Excel export though….

I know little about CGP but the data is in password-protected MS Access database.

Hi, weve converted about 10 sites from CGP to Opera 3 & opted to do it manually. There is the above tool, in the link provided & they gave us a s/sheet but we felt that was more work than simply creating a new Opera company & adding the details. Most CGP customers are relatively small with say a range of employees from 5 to 50, so the import seemed to be more hassle!

Thanks James, most helpful and I'm just waiting to get more info from customer on size of the payroll etc.,. I'm hoping we can fit it in before the payroll upgrades start!!

HI Claire attached is the CSV that I was talking about that is in relation to the above word doc. You've to create about 5 reports in CGP for the customer & export them. Some fields are "merged", or they're not in the right format to copy in to this CSV. Then you've to manually add some fields in to the CSV.

I changed my mind about 10 times thinking this was the way forward, then I retracted that & thought the manual way was better & so on. My colleague did use this import the other day & felt it was easier. She created the reports on her workstation, so they're "there". Then restored the clients CGP backup, exports the reports, completes the attached CSV & then uses this to import into Opera. We were hoping this "conversion routine" would have been a utility asking you "where the CGP payroll is" & then it would convert the data, but there is still a bit of manual work involved & it simply uses the Opera 3 standard importer

So you could try this, but like I say to be fair, the customer sites have had a relatively low employee counts & its been good practice for them to create the employee records, ensuring the YTD figures match CGP.

On a side note, what a lot have them have done is parallels runs, so theyre happy the figures match CGP - they havent immediately gone live. This highlighted a bug in Opera 3 that if you put your company or staff on holiday, the ERS NI didnt match CGP by 15p per employee. Pegasus have accepted this as a bug in Opera 3, latest version & we tested this a far back as 2.99.03. So we have been recommending clients do parallels runs comparing the two.

Thanks James and yeah my thinking is go manual as it's a really good way for the customer to get used to new system and I'm going to be pushed for time with the payroll upgrades looming.

I'm just waiting to find out how many employees they have - hoping it's a relatively small payroll…..
