New Lawson Item Numbers vs Updating Lawson Item Number
unknown
When converting product, do most customers use the same Lawson item number or create a new Lawson item number? What about version changes with custom packs?
What are other customers rules on when a new Lawson item number is created vs updating an existing Lawson item number?

Due to GTIN implementation we load a new item number. Rule is "new mfg number new item number" this is also for historical purposes as well, especially implantable items. Exceptions to the rule are custom packs and company merger.

What is the process for inventory items? Timing is important on when inventory is depleted, when pars are updated. Who is reponsible for updating pars and inactivating IC12 and IC11? How do you ensure the old item is not bought (either as inventory or nonstock) while inventory is being depleted?

The site inventory management is responsible for changing information throughout, including ParEx, areas we do not use Lawson Par. IC12 Auto purchase is set to N, once inventory is depleted they will change to inactive status, and a report is generated for MDM to inactivate the IC11 if no other IC12 is active. New item is watch along with this process to make sure the Auto P is set to Y at the correct time. To make this easy we add the replacement item number to an IC12 user field.

Our policy is the same as KWolfe stated. Our inventory managers/supervisors work with our Item Master data controller. If the vendor cannot buy back the old stock and the new is received before the old is used up, staff is told to use up the old item first before issuing the new. Depending on how much is available we might just issue out what's left to the heavy users to get it out of inventory. Inventory mgrs/sups have full access to IC12 but have to let the Item Master controller know to inactivate IC11. Inventory mgrs/sups also update pars; the material handlers report to them.

Same here - new thing = new item. Revision (ex: update to a custom kit) = reuse same lawson number.
We change description 1 on the "old" item to read "ITEM VOID USE [NEW LAWSON#]" and leave it active for a couple of weeks on IC11 but inactivate the PO13.3 record so it won't reorder.

Our general rule is also not to reuse Lawson item #'s except for Custom Packs and mergers, but we throw in 1 additional exception - non-clinical items. We do not build new item #s for products that do not touch patients - e.g. cleaning supplies or paper products.

Is there any pushback from staff regarding having to print and update labels for items on pars?
We are getting pushback that some items may be on 40 different pars. By changing the Lawson item number, they have to print 40 lables and then go to 40 pars to update the lables.
unknown
Yes - we get that. We tell them to print the labels and as the new product comes it, take the label up with it.

We are getting ready to convert our custom packs to a new distributor, & I had planned to propose to update existing Lawson numbers, but a recall hit an item in one of the existing packs, so now I'm reconsidering. Any advice? Thanks.

For the Label printing, we designed a custom form that allows them to print par labels a lot more quickly than MSCM through MHC. We can put in the item number and it will print a label for all locations that have the item.
We work with Materials Management to run the IC331 for mass changes.
