Excel Import / Export performance with 6.5.3
systemsadmin
Folks,
We have had some odd behavior with the Excel import / export function in terms of crashing on the client side during the import process (Excel -> Visual). It seems to occur with larger numbers of records (500+?), and only on slower machines that also happen to be x86 client OSes (mainly XP). I'm wondering whether the issue is more the resource limitations of memory or due to running a x86 OS with a large enough data set...
The machines in question run a gamut of P4 ~ Core 2 Duo procs, with 512 MB - 1GB memory (all with plenty of virtual memory space on the HD). Visual apps run more or less the same on x86 or x64 clients thus far, though the crashes do not occur on the x64 machines, whereas I have had the same large file (~1000-5000 records) crash several times on the x86 machine at random points. No other suspicious behavior noted (i.e. windows crashes or BSoD's that would point to faulty memory or mem controllers).
Anyone else notice this sort of behavior?

Hi,
No answers, just wondering what you're importing from Excel? Is this for importing an engineering master, or something else?
Thanks,

I have not had this experience with large files. Although I did have trouble with loading budget files for the first time.
The issue turned out to be formatting. Some cells in the CSV file had been formatted with comma seperation in the number format and that lead to the import crashing. Another factor might be regional settings on the problem computers differ form the server.
Cheers
