Baan 5.0c : database migration from Oracle to SQL Server
Legacy Contributor
Hello everybody,
It is the fist time I post a topic in the forum and I hope it is the appropriate category.
Today we are running Baan V on AIX 5.2 with the database Oracle 9.2. We want to move to Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. I am looking for feedbacks of users that have this configuration. I need to be sure that there is no performance issue with this configuration.
Thanks for your help.

I have seen very few customer moving out of unix and oracle to win/sql server simply because unix is considered to be more stable and free from virus , malwares, however having said I beleieve and feel overall oracle performs much better than sql server. but it also depends upon i guess how u configure ur sql server db parameters ...

I think it depends a lot on the size of the business, number of concurrent users and modules deployed. We have 60 user licences and we use all the core modules. We converted from HPUX 11/Oracle 9i to Windows 2003 R2 and SQL Server 2005 about a year ago without performance degradation. It is definitley an option for mid-size business but not sure it would be scalable for if you have more than 100 concurrent users actively using the system.

We are running IVc4 on HPUX using Informix as DB. Our current version of Informix must be upgraded by 9/30/2011. So we too are considering a migration to a Windows platform. Our db is about 60 gig and we have 35 licences. Is anyone willing to share their hardware configuration?

We are running windows R2 and sql server 2005 with baaniv sp18 on a dell poweredge 2950 with 2 intel xeon 2 ghz and 16 GB Ram. Behind it for storage is a DAS with 1,3TB. The machine is more than enough for 65 concurrent users and we have no restictions on the sessions.

We investigated moving to windows with sql and found several companies with successful implementations. It should not be an issue from a technology standpoint. Benchmarking shows sql overal performs better than oracle, however, a lot depends on the application itself. Challenges of a windows environment for us were high availability clustering, disaster recovery and layered products. We are heading in the linux / oracle direction.

I am wondering if any tools for data migration beyond using bdepre/bdepost. We are planning migration from Oracle 9i to SQL Server 2008 R2 ...Did you use any other tools which it should handle data properly

HI,
Thank you for your answers.
Today we have 600 Go in the production company but we have an archive compy with 600 Go too.
We have a license for 150 concurrent users.
Is there someone that have already implemented BaaN V with SQL Server and Windows?
@gburleigh
: Can you tell me how I can find companies that successfuly implemented SQL Server 2008 with Windows Server 2008 R2 ?
@Sasa
Sikimic: For data migration, Infor will use their tools. I don't know if they are the tools you mentionned or others. Wich version of BaaN do you have? Is it BaaN V?
Many thanks.

We run Baan virtually using vmware. Both our app server and our db server hardware specs are: Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard X64 Edition SP 2, Dual Core 2.9 Ghz processor, 16.00 GB RAM. We are Baan 5c SP 17 porting set 8.4a
The biggest issues for our migration was the porting set. You will probably need to upgrade your porting set to use SQL and you will need to get clarification from Infor as to which porting set would work best with your environment. Also you will probably have to go to SLM licencing which requires a physical server. So we put the license server on a separate physical server we have. Lastly, we used bdbpre/bdbpost - not sure of other tools. It is a very long process but you can modify db_resource for the load process to help speed it up and we used jobs that ran concurrently.

: You are right. We will need to upgrade our porting set and this task will be done by infor. So, I hope it will be done properly. The migration will be done by Infor and I think that they master the different steps of this kind of project.
I have doubts regarding performance because I can't find a company that use BaaN V with SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 with many data.

Would u mind sharing db_resource file settings to speed up seq. dumps ... we have a lot of data and i was trying to see if i can speed up bdbpre/bdbpost processing while other baan jobs are running.
