Returning Shipment but not cost associated

Looking to see if anyone has a solution - we custom manufacture our product. For some orders the customer changes the design after we have completed so they will are invoiced for the original but we keep the product. We want to keep the cost with the project but put the inventory back into our system.
Is there away we can return the product without returning the cost - the revenue I can deal with?

Adjust In was going to be my suggestion also but then you have a product/part in inventory @ zero dollars. Are you going to reuse this product/part?

My suggestion/solution was adjusting in but others in company thought there had to be a different way. We may reuse so looking into how we need to enter from finance side for resale.
