VMDI Generator and Exchange for 6.52

We are in the process of testing out an upgrade from 6.38 to 6.52. We have 3 CPO order layouts created in 6.38. I can bring them up in 6.52 and they look the same as in 6.38 although 6.52 has some length and field positions that have changed. I expected my current 6.38 order files to not import in without a lot of errors due to the layout changes. They all 3 imported in just fine. Does anyone know if there has been logic put in 6.52 that allows previous layouts to work? This seems very odd to me. Thanks.
