On Traceability
Legacy Contributor
Hello,
We're looking into setting up traceability for some of our products, and I was wondering how most other people did it.
We manufacture a number of pieces of equipment, each of which has several subcomponents that get serial numbers (A fairly dense circuit board, an HID lamp, etc.)
I'm new to setting all this up, but in my testing, it would seem that all I can do is assign traceable parts to work orders. I can't seem to link, for instance, a lamp to a particular machine that's getting shipped out unless the work order was only for one machine.
We have some custom test hardware and software which I can (and plan to) modify to write to the user columns in the TRACE table (And apparently TRACE_HISTORY), for storing the results of automated tests that are run on the parts.
Like I said, my primary concern right now is actually linking the serial number of a subordinate part to its master. Any thoughts? How does everyone else do it? Am I missing something obvious?
We also have Visual Quality and the barcode module, but I haven't yet figured out how we plan to implement them, either.

My issue has been the same, I was able to overcome it using the fields in the trace profile of the RECEIVING units. Are you traceing many components of the finished good or few?

For the moment, it'd probably be about 3 items per finished product. Long term, we'd like to improve our part tracing capabilities, though.

in the profile for the RECEIVING part, how many of the 10 available fields are you using?

Only a few, so I guess I can do it that way. Just doesn't seem particularly elegant.

That's for sure. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee which lamp, motor, compressor, board went into each unit. The nice thing will be in trace maintenance, when the serial for the receiving item is brought up, you will see the component serial #s right there on the line.

We did this will a custom application. A new table was created to hold the parent/child/inventory trans association. We have one traced product with 20 traced parts inside. One level in the BOM has 9 child items(circuit boards) to one parent. The application is even setup to process the return of the child items with status changes to put them back into testing. It's a bit rough around the edges though. We had this done during implementation in 2009.
I was a bit disappointed with the lack of this functionality in VE, but it helps when the people doing the install know their stuff!
