Faxing from FACTS
jeff-christie
Have a customer who is unhappy with the vsifax faxing product. He's experiencing an unacceptable (to him) failure rate when sending out faxes. Mostly through Document Delivery. We're working with Esker on this, but he's also questioning me on any alternatives to vsifax. I've never worked with anything other than vsifax, but I thought I'd throw out a question if anybody has done or seen any other faxing product or actually used one with FACTS.

Haven't used anything except Vsifax -
Here's some things to consider
There are so many reasons why a fax transmission could fail:
- call failure during call setup (e.g. wrong number, wrong service, answering fax answers too late ...)
- failure during negotiation (e.g non standard-compliant implementation, too long delay ...)
- failure during transmission (e.g caused by noise or other
disturbances ...)
- failure after transmission of several pages (e.g. buffer overflow ,
paper out ...)
Expect dropped call rates from 2-5%.
There are too many variables, over which you have no control.
Make sure that email notification is setup to always email the user on failed transmissions.
Send a report (daily or weekly) such as # vfxolog | grep MAX >/tmp/junk.vsifax; mail -s " Vsifax Failed Report" user@domain.com

We haven't used anything else here either. However, we've had sever problems when using internal modems; so as a rule we always insist on an external modem and will not even entertain trying an internal modem.

Had similar issues with one of our clients. When they went to a VMWare machine, we recommended FaxOnDemand, which requires internet access. They subscribed to the service and it has been great.
Buying the right modem, Multiple modems( to handle redundant hardware), multiple phone lines, integrate modems with OS running under VMWare, all those headaches are GONE.
We used to get calls at least once a month, sometimes 3 or 4. With FaxOnDemand we have gotten one call since it was installed about two years ago. Nice product. It has a web interface that allows access to an online log.
Call Esker and ask for Chris Graves. He was a great help to me, both in pricing out the product and getting it all set up.
