How local? There is a Midwest Visual Users Group. They had a meeting in Bloomington, MN on March 6th. Or are you thinking strictly Michigan?

I'd suggest getting in contact with Synergy Resources if you're interested in creating a separate region from the Midwest Group. At their previous user conference they were very interested in expanding the success of the New England User Group to other regions.
The consensus was to form user groups in NY/NJ/PA area and one further south (VA/MD/??) as well. SR was very interested in creating other regions and even talked about spearheading the whole thing by possibly holding special events to bring people in and help guide those interested through the process.
