Error handling in API

I have successfully created an API load for purchase orders, but I am not able to access _goback_var$ when it does not like the incoming xml file. I have tried to get it in an error recovery procedure but it doesn't seem to be set. Does anyone have good error handling set up in their custom API purchase order load? Thanks!
